Sunday Stealing: The Twenty Firsts Meme

You can play here.

First Job: Computer Programmer

First Real Job: Same as the previous answer. It's the only job I've ever done.

First Favorite Politician: I've never had a favourite politician.

First Car: Probably a small Matchbox one.

First Record/CD: I think my first record was T Rex's single "Children of the Revolution". My first CD was a Suzanne Vega single "Left of Center" which I got before I actually possessed anything to play it on, such was my fannish zeal.

First Sport Played: Soccer.

First Concert: I remember being taken to see Peter Noone when I was five or six maybe.

First Foreign Country Visited: France. I went on a ski trip to Cauterets with the school.

First Favorite TV Show: Get Smart.

First Favorite Actor: Tony Curtis (thanks to The Great Race)

First Favorite Actress: Jane Fonda (thanks to Cat Ballou)

First Girlfriend/Boyfriend: Her name was Catherine and I met her on the ski trip mentioned earlier when I was thirteen or fourteen.

First Encounter with a Famous Person: She wasn't famous at the time, but When I was eleven, there was a girl in my class called Cathryn Bradshaw who went on to become an actress.

First Brush With Death: Probably being born - if that doctor hadn't slapped me when he did I would have been a goner, I tell you. To tell the truth, I went through all manners of disasters as a kid (setting the bed on fire, having a big stone land on my head, being hit by a car) that I just shrugged off then, but looking back now I guess could have potentially killed me.

First House/Condo Owned: I've never owned anywhere, I've only ever rented.

First Film Seen: I can't remember a time when I wasn't watching films, so I've no idea which once came first. The first one I can remember was "Genghis Khan".

First Favorite Recording Artist: Sweet.

First Favorite Radio Station: Radio One.

First Book I Remember Reading: Dr. Seuss's "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish". There were others before that, but that's the only one that sticks in my memory.

These are the dangers of smoking in bed. You shouldn't give cigarettes to the underage for this very reason; they can't assess the danger properly and burn whole houses down. Seriously, what did you do?
I wish I had known Dr. Seuss when I was a kid. But, of course, I wouldn't have understood a word, since I didn't speak English then. I'm sure I would have enjoyed him even more than I do now.

Thanks for the comments.

Thom - For what it's worth, I struggled trying to remember things too.

A Blog In The Rough - Well, I guess that balances things out (although maybe your Catherine Bradshaw would need to be infamous to do that).

Rikki - Yeah, Dr. Seuss was great as a kid, but I couldn't find that many books by him at the time. I had to wait until my nephew came along before I had an excuse to get reacquainted.

As for setting the bed on fire, I wish I could put it down to smoking in bed, which would at least show some curiosity or maybe youthful rebellion on my part, or pyromania or pyrokinesis even, which would make for a better story, but it was down to simple stupidity (as, thinking about it, were most of the other brushes with death I mentioned). I was young (I'll guess five or six, but I could be wrong; definitely one of those single figure ages) and I was on my own, sitting in bed, a reading lamp behind me. Anyway, at some point or other, I reached behind the reading lamp to grab a book, or maybe I was just going to switch the lamp off (not totally sure, I didn't realise at the time this would be worth recounting decades later, so wasn't paying much attention). Anyway, somehow I managed to knock the lamp over onto the bed, the lightbulb broke open, flames suddenly appeared. Realising this wasn't a good thing, I think I threw some covers over the flames, presumably unplugged the lamp, and no doubt thinking I'd done a brilliant fireman job, I trotted to the room next door and crawled into the unburnt bed there and fell asleep.

The next morning, my younger sister had the temerity to wake the whole house up, just because the place was full of smoke (or maybe she could just smell smoke, I can't remember now, and I suspect that I'd have just wanted to go back to sleep regardless of how much smoke there was). Anyway, we got dragged out of bed and deposited outside on the front doorstep, and it turned out the bed was happy smouldering away (although it was easily put out; fortunately it hadn't burst into flames, and fortunately my sister had alerted us in time, otherwise things could have turned out a lot different).

Anyway, that's what happened. Hope that's satisfied your curiosity.

Cat Ballou is one of my all-time favorite movies -- more for Lee Marvin than Jane Fonda, though. :)

Here's wishing you a fun-filled Sunday!

You're probably smarter renting right now. I remember that Susanne Vega tune.

Hootin' Anni - Thanks for visiting. Happy stealing!

Carleen - Yeah, Cat Ballou's a great movie, and Lee Marvin's terrific in it.

Improbable Joe - Yeah, the CD had an extra track on it, and I didn't realise at the time that one day near enough all rare tracks would be available in cyberspace.

NurseExec - I posted near enough the same comment over at your blog, just before I spotted yours.

Holy cow, why did I ask? Not only did you satisfy my curiosity lock, stock and barrel, you cured it, too.

You're British!!

Will you marry me?

That was a joke.

Seriously.

I am Harriet - You're right about the renting now.

Joy - Well, it's not that hard to remmeber, since it wasn't until my teens when I had a favourite radio station, and there wasn't a lot of choice at the time in the UK with only one big national radio station playing the current music.

Bud - Enjoy your Sunday too.

Rikki - Glad I satisfied and cured your curiosity, even though it took a really dull semi-remembered reminiscence to do it.

kalea_kane - Yeah, my life's like one long Final Destination movie. Happy Sunday to you too.

fishingaround - Yes, I will marry you! You've made me the happiest man ali- Oh, wait, it was a joke? Forget I said anything.
